96AD Clement to Corinth

 CLEMENT TO CORINTH

CAN AN ANCIENT CHRISTIAN TEACH ME SOMETHING ABOUT UNITY AND LEADERSHIP IN THE CHURCH?

This work was originally written in approximately 96 AD by Clement of Rome, a Bishop of the church at that time. This writing has been of great value and widely distributed throughout the universal church from the time of its inception because of the rich expression and wisdom of Clement’s faith that is evident in the work. Here we are given the privilege of taking a historical journey with Clement as he inserts himself into a divisive and destructive rebellion breaking forth at the infamous Church of Corinth. In scripture itself, not many years prior to Clement, the Apostle Paul also inserted himself into such an unwelcome occasion at Corinth, though his intervention might be considered more relevant due to his role in planting that ancient church in its first days of infancy.

How would you respond to a mutiny transpiring in the life of a church in a neighboring city? Would you care enough to intervene? How boldly and authoritatively would you speak into a situation like that, especially when it’s not a problem of your own making? Adding to the already bitter circumstance occurring in Corinth, it’s insightful to understand that Clement is also bearing the burden of his leadership role in the midst of a horrid wave of persecution at home in Rome.
